A 28-year-old man was killed Saturday night when he lost control of his pickup truck while northbound on Interstate 5 at Poinsettia Lane, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The victim was identified by the San Diego County coroner’s office as Douglas Everett Cole of Carlsbad, a self-employed firewood salesman.
The CHP said Cole, who was alone in the vehicle, was traveling about 80 m.p.h. in the fast lane when he suddenly veered across the traffic lanes and ran off the road on the right shoulder.
Cole died at the scene about 8:30 p.m. after being ejected from the vehicle when it crashed into an embankment, the coroner’s office said.
Deputy Coroner Charles Kelley said the accident was alcohol-related.
