Car Tied to Swedish Spy Found in Finland

STOCKHOLM — Finnish police found a rented car Saturday that Stig Bergling, who was serving a life term as one of Sweden’s most notorious spies, apparently used to flee Sweden.
Esbjorn Esbjornsson, the Swedish police investigator heading the manhunt, said the car was found near Helsinki, the Finnish capital.
The discovery of the car supported speculation that Bergling fled to the Soviet Union. There are several ferry connections between Finland and the Soviet Union across the Baltic Sea.
Bergling, 50, who was convicted of selling defense secrets to the Soviet Union, escaped from custody last Tuesday during an overnight conjugal visit at his home. Under Swedish law, every prisoner is entitled to visit his home for a period determined by the length of his sentence.
