Quake Damage Estimate Rises

From Associated Press

Officials today raised the estimate of damage from last week’s earthquake and aftershocks to $177 million as the city launched an emergency effort to house those displaced in the disaster.

Richard Andrews of the state Office of Emergency Services today told several hundred government officials that more than 9,000 people have been displaced by the quake. He made the announcement in the City of Industry, where state and federal officials announced plans to open five disaster assistance centers for earthquake victims Sunday.
