A Colorado man was killed when his car ran off Interstate 5 two miles north of Harbor Drive in Oceanside and struck a car parked on the shoulder, Officer Jerry Bohrer of the California Highway Patrol said.
Richard Allan Heilman, 33, of Commerce City was pronounced dead at the scene.
Before the Tuesday accident, a car had become disabled and a driver in another vehicle pulled over in front of it to offer aid. The drivers of the vehicles were standing on the shoulder when Heilman’s car veered out of traffic and struck the Samaritan’s car, Bohrer said.
A witness told officers that Heilman’s car was traveling an estimated 80 m.p.h. when the accident occurred. Heilman’s car struck a guard rail and overturned several times down an 18-foot embankment, Bohrer said.
