The Hotel Inter-Continental officially became the San Diego Marriott at midnight Wednesday. The final hurdle for the changeover was crossed Tuesday when the San Diego port district, which leases the land to the hotel’s owners, approved the switch in operators.
Joel Rothman, a 26-year employee of Marriott who was formerly general manager of the chain’s Anaheim hotel, was named San Diego Marriott manager. Signs on the hotel will be changed to Marriott in the next 30 days, Marriott vice president Jim Reed said.
Sandor Stangl, who had managed the 681-room hotel for the British-based Inter-Continental Hotels chain since its 1984 opening, will be reassigned to one of Inter-Continental’s other North American units, possibly to one of those being built in Los Angeles, Toronto, Chicago and Atlanta, area vice president Michael Cairns said.
