A 60-year-old man died after being shot by an unknown assailant in the parking lot of a veterans’ hall in East San Diego, authorities said Tuesday.

Artie Roy Hines, of the 5300 block of Trinidad Way in San Diego, was shot once in the chest about 9 p.m. Monday in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall parking lot in the 1100 block of 43rd Street, a San Diego police spokeswoman said.

He died a short time later at Paradise Valley Hospital, according to the coroner’s office.

Witnesses told police they saw a black man in his mid-20s, about 5-foot-11 and 150 pounds, with shoulder-length hair, fleeing the scene, the spokeswoman said.
