Runcie, said in Cairo that Iranian Parliament Speaker Hashemi Rafsanjani is prepared to help find out who is holding his Middle East envoy, Terry Waite, who was kidnaped in Beirut in January. “I have recently written to Rafsanjani giving him some impressions we have received from one or two Christian contacts in the Middle East,” Runcie said. “He does not know who is holding Terry Waite,” the archbishop said, “but he will try to find out.” Runcie said the Anglican Church believes Waite is still alive. “We naturally have ideas about where he is and the sort of people who may be holding him . . . but we could be wrong about these things,” he said.
