Orange County College Roundup : Top-Ranked Stanford Beats UCI in Water Polo

Bob Abbott scored two goals to lead No. 1-ranked Stanford to a 5-4 nonconference victory over No. 3 UC Irvine Friday in a nonconference water polo match at Stanford.

Grant Stanley scored with 2:43 left in the fourth quarter to give Stanford (11-1) a 5-3 lead. Dan Smoot scored two goals, including one with 15 seconds left to play, for Irvine (5-3).

Obi Greenman had 13 saves for Stanford and Mark Malgel had 12 for Irvine.

In men’s nonconference soccer:

Christ College Irvine 2, Pacific Christian 1--Rodney Nelson scored two first-half goals to lead Christ College at Pacific Christian. Scott McKinney scored late in the match for Pacific Christian (0-7), which had nine saves from goalie Oscar Heredia. Jeff Riedmann had four saves for Christ College.

Grand Canyon 2, Southern California 1--Eric Jerle’s goal broke a 1-1 tie with 25 minutes left for Grand Canyon at Southern California. Toby Rey has scored early in the first half to give SCC (3-7-1) a 1-0 lead, but John Ivankic scored late in the half to tie the score 1-1.

In men’s nonconference cross-country:

UC San Diego 15, Chapman 50--Tim Vallez ran a time of 28 minutes 26 seconds to lead San Diego on the five-mile course at UC San Diego.

In Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. women’s volleyball:

San Jose State, 3, UC Irvine 1--Junior middle blocker Kris Roberts had 17 kills and sophomore outside hitter Ali Wood had 15 for the Anteaters, who lost to fourth-ranked San Jose State, 15-3, 15-7, 9-15, 15-10, at Irvine.

The loss broke a four-game winning streak for Irvine (2-3, 6-5), the longest since 1985. Carol Watson had 13 kills and 15 digs to lead San Jose State (5-0, 10-0).

Hawaii 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--Diana Jessie had 11 kills, Teee Williams 8 and Suzanne Eagye 7 as second-ranked Hawaii (5-0, 10-0) beat the Titans, 15-0, 15-3, 15-3, at Fullerton. Fullerton is 1-6, 8-10.
