Mack Lobell set the pace, but Napoletano won the race, and for the 16th straight year there is no trotting triple crown champion.
Mack Lobell, winner of the Yonkers Trot and the Hambletonian, took the lead at the start of the second heat of the Kentucky Futurity at the Red Mile in Lexington, Ky.,, and kept it through fractions of 29 4/5 seconds for the quarter-mile, 1:01 1/5 for a half-mile and 1:311/5 for three-quarters.
But Mack Lobell couldn’t keep the lead in the last quarter, raced in a fast 26 2/5, as Napoletano caught him in the final strides for a half-length victory.
