SAN DIEGO — San Diego’s Benito Santiago extended his rookie-record hitting streak to 33 games with an eighth-inning bunt single Thursday.
There have been only 14 hitting streaks in history longer than Santiago’s. He is tied at 33 with Rogers Hornsby, George Davis and Heinie Menush.
While Santiago kept hitting, the Padres kept losing as Dave Collins had three doubles and scored twice to help the Cincinnati Reds score a 4-3 victory. It was San Diego’s eighth straight defeat.
Santiago also failed to get the ball out of the infield in his three previous trips to the plate.
