Canadian riot police escorted busloads of non-union workers into Montreal postal sorting centers on the first day of a nationwide strike, and state-owned Canada Post Corp. reported that it is still moving the mail. The 23,000-member Canadian Union of Postal Workers had planned rotating walkouts across the country, but about 2,000 militants in the Montreal area staged a full-fledged strike. The union contends that government plans for automation and sales of post office franchises to drugstores and other firms will eliminate thousands of jobs.
