Newport to Stage Salute to Arts Tonight

The fifth annual Newport Salute to the Arts, an evening’s worth of free performances and art, takes place today from 5 to 8 at various locations, including the Newport Harbor Art Museum, the nearby branch of the city library and Fashion Island stores and outdoor plazas.
Performers at the city-backed festival will range from jazz combos and string quartets to dance groups. Opera Pacific, the Pacific Symphony, South Coast Repertory, Orange Coast College, the Orange County Philharmonic Society and the South Coast Symphony will be among the participants.
Art displays will include a juried show at the atrium of the Pacific Financial Cos. offices. A van containing works from the Bowers Museum will be stationed at Fashion Island.
Admission to the festival is free and $5 scrip books will be available to those who want to sample food being offered by 30 restaurants.
