The International Olympic Committee said in Lausanne, Switzerland, that it is studying a new letter from North Korea about a possible sharing of the 1988 Summer Games with South Korea.

“We have received a communication from North Korea as we had requested and it is now being studied,” an IOC official said. “We are not revealing any details now, but there may be a statement at the end of the month.

North Korea had threatened to boycott the 1988 Games, awarded to South Korea, unless there was a sharing arrangement.

South Korea agreed on July 3 to an IOC proposal that North Korea stage the table tennis and archery events and some preliminary soccer matches. It also agreed to have the 100-kilometer cycling competition begin in North Korea and end in South Korea. In return, North Korea was asked to provide certain guarantees--including unrestricted entry for officials, competitors and the media.
