Convicted killer-rapist William Archie Fain was arrested by Scotts Valley police for drunken driving. Fain, released from San Quentin in October, 1983, after serving 16 years for killing a 17-year-old Stanislaus County youth and raping two girls in 1967, was booked into the Santa Cruz County jail and released. Fain became one of the state’s most controversial criminals when Gov. George Deukmejian, in an extraordinary move, overrode the prison parole board and canceled his scheduled parole in April, 1983. Fain, now 40, eventually was paroled, even though 62,500 people signed petitions asking he not be released. He was finally freed after an appellate court ruled that his parole had been improperly rescinded.
