Soap Spill Closes Intersection

Santa Ana firefighters blocked off a busy intersection for two hours Wednesday in the mistaken belief that there had been a toxic spill. Instead, the slimy, green substance that spilled from several fiberglass drums turned out to be soap, a Santa Ana Fire Department spokesman said.
At about 10 a.m., at the corner of Warner Avenue and Harbor Boulevard, a trailer carrying five fiberglass drums somehow became detached from the pickup truck hauling it, Battalion Chief Richard Keller said.
The trailer collided with a car driven by George Bergman, 61, and the drums slid off the trailer into the intersection. Firefighters roped off the area, thinking the spilled substance might be toxic. When they discovered it was soap, they simply hosed down the streets and reopened them.
A spokesman said he did not know if the driver of the pickup truck, John Anthony Griffin, was cited. No one was injured in the incident.
