A narcotics detective who was seriously hurt in a one-car accident that injured three other San Diego police officers pleaded guilty Monday to reckless driving.
The plea to the misdemeanor charge was entered for Jesse Raymond Almos, 39, through his attorney, James Gattey, before San Diego Municipal Court Judge Fred Link.
Almos’ car wrapped around a telephone pole in downtown San Diego Jan. 24. He reportedly was driving 60 m.p.h. in a 25-m.p.h. zone.
His three passengers suffered minor injuries, but Almos fractured both legs and his pelvis, and received various internal injuries. He appeared in court initially on crutches, but later waived his personal presence for the plea.
Sentencing was set for Aug. 28. Although the maximum sentence is 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine, Deputy Dist. Atty. Doug Gregg said there is no sentencing agreement.
Link dismissed another charge of reckless driving with injury. Gregg said conviction on that charge would have resulted in the revocation of Almos’ driver’s license.
Police spokesman Bill Robinson said Monday that Almos is on medical leave from the department.
The passengers, James Boyd, 28; Michael Gordon, 30, and Tony McElroy, 29, had no charges filed against them.
