Company’s Plans for Saugus Prison Appear to Be Fading

Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich said Thursday that a private company has abandoned its efforts to convert a juvenile detention camp near Saugus into an adult prison.

However, Sam Hunter, executive vice president of Management and Training Corp. of Ogden, Utah, said the company has not pulled out and is continuing to search for a 200-bed juvenile detention facility--a condition imposed by the Board of Supervisors for converting the Artesian Oaks camp into a prison. But, he acknowledged, “We’re not very optimistic.”

The company sought to convert the closed Lake View Terrace Hospital into a juvenile detention facility, but dropped that effort last month because of strong community opposition.

Antonovich, whose district includes Saugus, issued a statement Thursday announcing that “he has been informed that an agreement to convert the Artesian Oaks juvenile detention facility in Bouquet Canyon into an adult facility for parole violators has been withdrawn.

“Management and Training Corp. of Ogden, Utah, informed the Artesian Oaks property owner that they were unable to find suitable facilities elsewhere to house juveniles,” the statement said.
