Dollar Hits Another Low Against Yen

NEW YORK — The dollar turned mixed against European currencies on Thursday after plunging to another record low against the Japanese yen.
Gold prices held steady. Bullion was quoted at $347.50 an ounce at Republic National Bank, New York, unchanged from Wednesday.
Dealers said there was little economic news to move the dollar.
Earlier in Tokyo, where trading ends before Europe’s business day begins, the dollar lost 1.35 yen to close at a new post-World War II low of 156.95. Dealers attributed the fall to a report in a Japanese newspaper that the United States is satisfied with the dollar’s present performance and may do little to push it up.
Although a weak dollar makes Japanese exports more expensive, there was no sign of Japanese central bank intervention Thursday to strengthen the U.S. currency.
