The City Council voted this week to allow West Covina Disposal Co. to raise monthly trash pickup rates by 17.5% to 22.5%.
Effective this month, rates for once-a-week trash collection for single-family homes will increase to $6.70 from $5.70, to $4.90 from $4 for apartments and to $45 from $38 for businesses, according to a city official.
Emily Penfield, administrative analyst for the city manager’s office, said the company requested the increase to cover rising insurance rates and dump fees.
Trash rates were last increased in 1984 by an average of 16%, Penfield said.
