Martinez Singles Home Winning Run for Gulls

Gulls first baseman Domingo Martinez greeted Palm Springs relief pitcher Barry Dacus with a two-out single in the top of the ninth inning, scoring the winning run in Ventura County’s 4-3 win Thursday night over the Angels in Palm Springs.

Martinez’s single scored Greg Myers, who started the rally with a base hit off Angel starter Scott Marrett, who is from Woodland Hills. Geronimo Berroa also singled to knock Marrett from the game. Martinez then hit Dacus’ first pitch into right field for the winning hit in the California League game.

William Shanks pitched the bottom of the ninth to save the win for Hugh Brinson (6-3), who relieved for starter Jeff Musselman. The save was the 12th of the year for Shanks.
