The state credited an alert citizen with spotting an illegal dumping of a hazardous waste in Los Angeles County that was quickly cleaned up. Health Director Kenneth Kizer said the citizen used the department’s waste alert hot line, 800-25-TOXIC, to report the dumping of eleven 55-gallon drums of black petroleum-smelling liquid on a vacant lot in Wilmington, near Long Beach. It covered a 35-square-foot area. An emergency response contractor was dispatched to remove the drums and contaminated soil. Kizer said Los Angeles police are investigating.
