A Newport Beach woman was critically injured Saturday morning when the car in which she was a passenger was hit broadside by a truck.
The truck’s driver, Jeffrey Penfield, 31, of Los Osos, was held in Orange County Jail on $10,000 bail on suspicion of felony drunk driving.
The 10 a.m. accident occurred at Jamboree Road and Coast Highway in Newport Beach.
Police Sgt. Mike McDonough said Penfield was heading westbound on the highway toward Huntington Beach and failed to stop at the red light at Jamboree. Instead, McDonough said, Penfield’s truck hit a Honda sedan that was moving north across the intersection under a green light.
The Honda’s driver, Jerry Green, 36, of Newport Beach, was treated at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital for facial cuts and a neck injury.
His passenger, Lisa Gray, 26, was in critical condition Saturday night at the same hospital.
McDonough said Gray suffered severe head and internal injuries, including a ruptured spleen.
The two were treated at the scene by paramedics, then taken to the Fountain Valley hospital by paramedics.
Penfield was examined at the same hospital and taken to jail after it was determined that he was not injured, McDonough said.
Late Saturday, traffic investigators were still studying the cause of the accident.
