CRITIC POP

Los Angeles Times, get a grip on yourself!
When Robert Hilburn mentions Lone Justice’s Maria McKee in the same breath as the Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde, he transcends that thin line between being a tasteless and visionless middle-age critic to needing to be institutionalized (“The Heartbeat of Rock Returns to America,” Dec. 22).
I understand that the “guy you like to hate” approach (e.g., Howard Cosell) can be popular in eliciting voluminous responses from the readers, but at least get someone competent.
The truly sad part is that there are other equally tasteless and visionless readers who may read Hilburn’s garbage and buy a Lone Justice album over a Pretenders’ album.
What’s next . . . Air Supply is the new Talking Heads!!!
