Defending State champion Crenshaw High went on a 17-2 run in the third quarter to turn a close game into a blowout en route to a 101-74 win over Myrtle Beach High Friday in the first round of a high school basketball tournament at Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Crenshaw led at halftime, 44-33, but Myrtle Beach closed to within seven midway through the third quarter. At that point, Crenshaw exploded behind four dunks by Dion Brown to take a 22-point lead and turn the game into a rout. Brown finished with 15 points.
Forward Steven Thompson, last season’s City Player of the Year, had to leave in the first half with a sprained ankle after scoring 10 points. Coach Willie West said Thompson is questionable for Crenshaw’s championship semifinal game Sunday against Seton Hall of West Orange, N.J.
Five Crenshaw players finished in double figures, led by Tracey Freeman with 19 points. George Dow of Myrtle Beach led all scorers with 32 points.
