About 500 students marched through the neighborhood near the Washington Preparatory School as part of the school’s special emphasis on nonviolence. “Gang violence is an everyday fact of life unfortunately,” school principal George McKenna said. The school sponsors the annual march as a preventive way of drawing attention to the problem. McKenna has received White House recognition for improving conditions at his school, located in the 10800 block of S. Denker Avenue.
