The University of San Diego, led by a near-perfect shooting performance from junior forward Nils Madden, beat Alaska-Anchorage, 78-64, Saturday night in the consolation game of the Longhorn Basketball Classic in Austin, Tex.
Madden, who was chosen for the all-tournament team, made all 7 of his shots from the field and was 7 of 9 from the free throw line to score a career-high 21 points. He also led the Toreros with 8 rebounds.
USD (6-4), which has gone 1-1 in each of its three tournaments this season, led throughout the game. Alaska-Anchorage (7-6), down 41-31 at halftime, pulled to within 51-47 with 10:52 to play.
But Madden and guard Pete Murphy sparked an 11-2 streak to put the Toreros ahead, 62-49, with eight minutes left.
Murphy added 14 points for USD, and center Scott Thompson scored 13. Guard Danny Means came off the bench to score 10 points and hand out 5 assists for the Toreros.
“We’ve come out flat the last couple of games,” USD Coach Hank Egan said. “But tonight we got good play from our guards. They shot well and also got the ball inside.”
