Four U.S. Olympic Boxers Win, Then Another One Is Married

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Evander Holyfield became the first of the 1984 Olympic boxing medalists to defeat a ranked opponent Saturday when he stopped Anthony Davis in the fourth round on a card where four Olympians won and another got married.

Welterweight gold-medal winner Mark Breland (8-0) won a unanimous decision over Hedgemon Robertson, super-heavyweight champion Tyrell Biggs (7-0) knocked out Tony Anthony in the first round, and featherweight gold medalist Meldrick Taylor (9-0), now fighting as a lightweight, won a unanimous decision over Pedro Acosta.

At the end of the card, Pernell (Sweetpea) Whitaker of Norfolk climbed into the ring and married Rovanda Anthony. Whitaker, the lightweight gold-medal winner, was scratched from the card because of a broken foot.

Holyfield (8-0), an Olympic bronze medalist as a light-heavyweight, stayed on course for a June title shot against the winner of the March 23 bout between World Boxing Assn. cruiserweight champion Dwight Qawi and Leon Spinks.
