Norway Buys Grieg Papers for $617,000

NEW YORK — The Norwegian government will pay $617,000 for manuscripts and letters by Edvard Grieg, Norway’s leading composer, according to a newspaper report.
The manuscripts, totaling more than 800 pages, include the handwritten score of “Peer Gynt,” Grieg’s most famous composition, the New York Post said Friday. The composer’s diary and letters, totaling another 1,300 pages, were also sold.
The sale, conducted in New York by descendants of the publisher of Grieg’s music, was accomplished after a year of negotiations, the paper said. Grieg died in 1907.
