‘His Master’s Voice’ Earful for Nipper

While otherwise near-accurate, “Merger With GE Marks a Homecoming for RCA” (Dec. 12) contains a couple of flaws: The article states that the famous trademark shows the dog, Nipper, peering into the horn of a cylinder phonograph.

Wrong! Nipper’s ear is cocked because he’s not “peering” but listening (to “His Master’s Voice”). More important, it’s not a “cylinder phonograph” but a disk gramophone (look at the trademark) as invented by my grandfather, Emile Berliner, founder of the disk record industry of today, and who also created what became the world’s most famous trademark, from a painting by Francis Barraud.
