Ocean View High School point guard Blaine DeBrouwer has been suspended for the remainder of the Tournament of Champions by Seahawk Coach Jim Harris following an altercation with referee Al Hackney on Wednesday night.
DeBrouwer did not suit up for the Seahawks’ game against St. Bernard on Friday, and Harris confirmed that the senior will not play in the fifth-place game today.
“Blaine is unavailable to play,” Harris said before the Seahawks’ tipoff with St. Bernard. “That’s all I am officially supposed to say.
“We’re trying to keep this as low-key as possible. It was an unfortunate situation, that’s all.”
DeBrouwer had words with Hackney during the Seahawks’ 53-51 loss to Capistrano Valley on Wednesday night and continued to argue with the official in the Cal Poly Pomona athletic department hallway following the game.
Witnesses reported that the two bumped each other and then had to be separated. Campus police were later summoned.
“It was a case of two similar personalities clashing,” Harris said.
