GDANSK, Poland — Solidarity founder Lech Walesa ignored a court summons today and laid flowers at a monument to shipyard workers slain in 1970 Baltic port riots. Police kept dozens of other people from the site.
Defying a summons to testify in the case of a student who died in unexplained circumstances, Walesa and two aides laid a bouquet of flowers at the riot site, knelt and prayed for more than 50 victims shot to death by police during protests that began over food price increases in several Baltic ports Dec. 16, 1970.
