Tennis Roundup : Leconte and Evernden Win in the Semifinals at Sydney

France’s Henri Leconte and New Zealand’s Kelly Evernden will meet today in the $145,000 New South Wales Open tennis tournament at Sydney, Australia.
Leconte, a 22-year-old Frenchman, used a destructive left-handed serve to defeat unseeded American Matt Anger, 6-4, 6-3 .
Evernden, 24, reached his second Australian final in two months with a 6-4, 7-6 victory over unseeded American Mark Dickson.
Evernden was in an automobile accident eight years ago in his native Gisborne. He was hospitalized for six months after suffering a broken leg, arm, ribs and having one lung removed.
He spent almost three years out of tennis recuperating from his injuries.
Bonnie Gadusek upset top-seeded West German Claudia Kohde-Kilsch, 6-4, 6-3, in a semifinal match of the $300,000 Pan Pacific Open at Tokyo.
Gadusek will play defending champion Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria in the final at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.
The 18-year-old Maleeva dominated Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia, 6-0, 6-2, with a combination of strong ground strokes, superb serves and fine net play. Maleeva won the first set in only 18 minutes.
