De la Madrid’s government suffered a setback.

Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies has rejected a proposal by President Miguel de la Madrid and the director of the Bank of Mexico to allow dollar accounts in Mexican banks along the U.S. border. Dollar accounts were banned in 1982, when the economic crisis started and Mexico had trouble meeting payments on its foreign debt. Dollar accounts were frozen and depositors could only withdraw their money in pesos.
