Disappointing Castle

On July 14 an article appeared entitled “Living History in a German Castle” by Martha Humphreys. Since we were planning a trip to Europe, the Hotel Burg Gutenfels, Kaub am Rhein, West Germany, sounded so great that it became one of our musts. It was the biggest disappointment of our 21-day trip. The article mentioned the owner, a former Luftwaffe pilot who served wine on the terrace, released falcons each evening, regaled them with tales of the castle history, had great fires in the huge fireplace, etc.

None of that exists now. The castle is managed by a dour, sour man who did nothing to make our stay pleasant. We were charged extra for parking, overcharged for drinks, and dinner consisted of soup and cold cuts for around $12 each. Our room was not furnished with antiques as the article mentioned, nor was it elegantly appointed with anything.
