DUBLIN, Ireland — WBA featherweight champion Barry McGuigan of Northern Ireland confirmed on Friday that he will make a voluntary defense of his title in February against Fernando Sosa of Argentina.
The Feb. 15 bout will be the first world title fight in Dublin since 1923, but no purse or details of television rights were announced at Friday’s news conference.
McGuigan--who won his title in London in the summer and made his first successful defense Sept. 28 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, against American Bernard Taylor--said he wanted to make his second defense in the Republic of Ireland as a thank you to his fans in the south.
