USIU Rallies to Down UCSD, 112-107

SAN DIEGO — High-scoring United States International University doubled its win total of last season when it beat UC San Diego, 112-107, Thursday night at UCSD’s Triton Pavilion.
The Gulls, who won one game last season and two games the season before that, evened their record at 2-2.
USIU is now averaging in triple figures both offensively and defensively, scoring 100.5 points and allowing 106.3 points per game.
USIU guard Joe Yezbak made 16 of 21 shots to lead all players with 33 points. He made 16 of 21 field-goal attempts, mostly on medium and long-range jumpshots, as the Gulls rallied from a 59-53 deficit.
Dwayne Cross added 24 points and 13 rebounds for USIU while Point Loma High School graduate Charles Redding scored 18.
Brian Backus led UCSD with 30 points, making 14 of 16 shots. Jim Smith scored 22 for the Tritons.
USIU returns to action Saturday night at 7:30 when it plays Air Force Academy at Southwestern College.
