WASHINGTON — The House approved a $10.6-billion college aid bill Wednesday that would tighten student loan requirements and raise the federal government’s Pell Grant for low-income students by $1,000 over the next six years to an annual maximum of $3,100.
The measure, which would extend statutory authority for a variety of federal aid programs for students, colleges and universities through fiscal 1991, cleared the House on a 350-67 roll-call vote. The Senate was expected to act on its version of the bill early next year.
