Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos said he welcomes the decision by Corazon Aquino, widow of assassinated opposition leader Benigno S. Aquino Jr., to challenge him for the presidency in the Feb. 7 election. Marcos said her decision is evidence that the election will be clean and fair. Aquino offered the vice president’s spot on her ticket to Salvador Laurel, himself a presidential candidate. But he refused, raising the prospect of a split that would help Marcos.
