Carson : Oil Facility Approved
A request by Union Oil Co. of California to construct an oil storage facility on land zoned for residential development was approved this week by the City Council.
Council members approved the request 3 to 1 with several conditions. Mayor Kay Calas abstained, and Councilwoman Vera Robles DeWitt voted against it. Union Oil cannot request any future nonconforming improvements on the property, and it must provide landscaping for the site at 1057 E. Victoria St.
The company has nine storage tanks on the site and plans to replace them with three new ones.
The land was rezoned for residential development in 1982, but no houses have been built there.
“Basically we’re replacing the old facility with a consolidated, updated facility,” Union spokesman Mike Bridges said.
