6 Killed in Sri Lanka in Land Mine Blast

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Five soldiers and a civilian were killed by a guerrilla land mine in Sri Lanka on Tuesday.
A Defense Ministry spokesman said three soldiers were also wounded in the blast, which occurred when Tamil separatist guerrillas exploded a mine under their vehicle in the eastern Trincomalee area.
The attack was the latest on security forces by guerrillas in a 10-year-old campaign for an independent state for the island’s minority Tamil community. India has attempted, with only mixed success, to broker an agreement that would end the conflict between the Tamils and majority Sinhalese.
