Viewers taking part in a national telephone survey said that Iowa quarterback Chuck Long should receive the Heisman Trophy, according to ABC-TV.
The network said that Long received 104,825 votes in narrowly outpolling Auburn running back Bo Jackson. Jackson had 99,789 votes.
Viewers had the option of voting for any of five players by calling a 900 number.
Michigan State running back Lorenzo White had 10,018 votes, Brigham Young quarterback Robbie Bosco received 7,808, and Oklahoma State running back Thurman Thomas had 3,891.
