Haiti Imposes News Blackout After Unrest

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Haitian authorities imposed a blackout Saturday on news of widening unrest following the fatal police shooting of three unarmed students in a northern town.
Two church-sponsored radio stations, the main public sources of news on the disturbances that began Thursday, broadcast a government statement asking the news media not to report on the protests.
The unrest erupted in Gonaives when police and troops fired into crowds protesting poverty and government repression. Three students were killed and others were wounded.
