Veteran actor and comedian Scatman Crothers is in fair condition at Beverly Hills Medical Center after exploratory surgery for a tumor near his left lung, hospital officials said. Nursing Supervisor Rose Marie Essler said Crothers’ vital signs are stable and he is doing well. The 75-year-old actor was operated on Monday. He is expected to require weeks of chemotherapy to treat the tumor. Doctors decided that removing it would be too dangerous. Essler said she did not know whether the tumor was benign or malignant. Crothers is well-known for his role as Louie the garbage man in the NBC television series “Chico and the Man.” He also starred in a segment of Steven Spielberg’s “The Twilight Zone.”
