Local News in Brief : Ed Davis Backs Radar for Kanan Road Traffic

A proposal to use radar to monitor motorists on an Agoura mountain road received the support of state Sen. Ed Davis Wednesday.
Davis (R-Valencia), who represents the area, said radar is badly needed to enforce speed laws on Kanan Road, where four people died last month in a crash.
Agoura residents and city officials in Agoura Hills have asked the California Highway Patrol to use radar on the 11-mile stretch. Because it is a county road, the supervisors must authorize its use.
On Tuesday, Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich said he would not support the proposal. He said his 18 years as a reserve policeman convinced him that radar has less effect on speeders than the “high profile” of officers on a busy street.
“Radar encourages patrolmen to adopt low visibility. The solution to the problem on Kanan Road is a high profile by the highway patrol,” Antonovich said.
But Davis, who spent 42 years as a policeman, including eight as Los Angeles police chief, said, “With conditions as they are on Kanan Road, radar is a necessity.”
Davis said in a statement that he led an effort to get radar enforcement on California 126 in Ventura County, a program he said has led to a 69% reduction in deaths on the road this year.
