INS Uses Children as ‘Bait’ to Capture Parents, Suit Says

A class-action lawsuit filed today against the Immigration and Naturalization Service charges that the children of thousands of illegal aliens are being detained and used as “bait” to capture parents.
The National Center for Immigrants’ Rights, the National Center for Youth Law and the American Civil Liberties Union announced the filing of the lawsuit at a news conference attended by activist and actor Ed Asner, and by a Salvadoran woman identified only as Anna, mother of a 13-year-old girl being held at a detention facility in Pasadena.
Asner said the INS policy of holding children until their parents undergo interrogation--and probable deportation--must be declared illegal.
