ABC to Cut Work Force by 3%

NEW YORK — American Broadcasting Cos. said Wednesday that it plans to reduce its work force of 13,000 by about 3% in an ongoing cost-cutting effort.
Up to 350 employees will be laid off by the end of August, ABC said. The company is planning to merge with Capital Cities Communications in a $3.5-billion deal expected to be completed in January.
The layoffs, which were ordered Tuesday by ABC President Frederick Pierce at a meeting of top managers, are not related to the merger, a spokeswoman said.
The managers were told to decide by Aug. 1 which employees would be laid off, ABC said.
ABC employs about 3,200 people in Los Angeles, plus a small number in other Western operations.
