Hartmarx bought Los Angeles-based Briar Inc.

Privately held Briar, which produces men’s and women’s neckwear and costume jewelry, was acquired by Hartmarx, a major Chicago-based manufacturer and retailer of men’s and women’s apparel. Terms were not disclosed. Briar was founded by Harold and Marilyn Athey in 1956. He becomes chairman emeritus. Stanley Franklin was promoted to president and chief operating officer from executive vice president.
