PEKING — More than 40,000 mosques, churches and Buddhist and Taoist temples have been renovated and opened in China in the last decade, the overseas edition of the People’s Daily said Monday.
The report said that China has 10 million Muslims, and about 5,000 of them have been elected to local people’s congresses and other political bodies. The government estimates there are 3 million practicing Catholics and 3 million Protestants.
Religion was banned during Mao Tse-tung’s 1966-76 Cultural Revolution, and the Chinese Communist Party espouses atheism.
