Justice Powell Has Operation

WASHINGTON — Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell Jr. underwent “highly successful” hernia surgery at a Minnesota hospital Monday, a spokeswoman for Powell announced today.
Virginia Eggleston, a secretary for Powell, said the justice, 77, experienced no complications in surgery described as a follow-up to an operation last January for removal of a cancerous prostate.
The earlier surgery forced Powell to miss two months of the high court’s 1984-85 term.
He was listed in good condition at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, according to a spokeswoman for the hospital.
Eggleston said she did not know when Powell will return to Washington.
