Navratilova-Shriver Streak Ends at 109; McEnroe-Fleming Also Upset at Wimbledon

WIMBLEDON, England — Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver had their record run of women’s doubles victories stopped at 109 matches as they lost in the Wimbledon final to Kathy Jordan and Australia’s Elizabeth Smylie, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, Saturday.

The streak started following a loss to King and Betty Stove in April, 1983.

Defending men’s champions John McEnroe and Peter Fleming were also upset in doubles. Seeking a third successive title and their fourth in the past six years, they lost in the semifinals to Australia’s Pat Cash and John Fitzgerald, 7-6, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

In the final, Cash and Fitzgerald lost to Switzerland’s Heinz Gunthardt and Hungary’s Balazs Taroczy, 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
